Homemade Fish Pesto Quinoa Baby Food Recipe
for Little Mashies reusable food pouches
Ingredients:
1 cup white fish, poached, with bones and skin removed
1/2 cup cooked quinoa
3 tablespoons pesto
1/2 cup peas, fresh or frozen
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare quinoa according to instructions on pack.
Step 2: Steam peas for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Combine quinoa and peas and stir through the pesto.
Step 4: Cut the cooked fish into bite size pieces checking all bones have been removed. Place fish pieces on top of the pesto mix for a toddler, and for a younger baby simply puree all ingredients together in a food processor.

For Older Kids & Baby Led Weaning Recipes
For older kids (and baby food recipes actually) you can use quinoa instead of pasta or rice in just about any dish! For baby led weaning cook the quinoa really well and simply place it on their Little Mashies sucky platter plate along with some avocado slices and large pieces of tomato. From 6-9mths of age foods should be the size of about 2 fingers so that the baby can pick it up and self feed. From around 9mths with baby led weaning you chop the food small again (to avoid choking). This isn't so relevant with quinoa as a baby food because it is already tiny and not so much of a choking hazard. A little tip though... quinoa comes in a few different colours. Try to use all the types not just stick to the white variety. The darker colours are higher in polyphenols which are wonderful for feeding good gut bacteria!
It's also a good idea in general to vary your little ones food intake as much as possible so they don't get used to specific foods. That's why we suggest instead of doing a weekly spaghetti bolognese vary it and do a quinoa bolognese, or use quinoa instead of rice under a curry! A variety of plant foods also helps babies to develop a diverse microbiome (good range of helpful gut bacteria). If you would like to learn more about gut bacteria I've written a children's book call Tummy Buggies. You can also read my story, as I've had a very long health history with gut health issues and have tried so many things! If you have any questions in this area just reach out!
Why is quinoa a great baby food choice?
Quinoa is a great addition to baby food and is often referred to as a superfood. It is a source of protein and can be used instead of rice in many dishes, in fact it has double the amount of protein as rice! Quinoa is rich in fibre, calcium and folate and has a lot of benefit to the growth and health of your little one, please remember though to soak quinoa over night in water before cooking. What was your favourite food as a child? We certainly didn't have quinoa on the menu when I was a baby!
